Academic Opportunities

Although UNC Asheville is a liberal arts university, its academic offerings go well beyond what you might expect from a small institution.

One particularly distinctive program is printmaking. UNC Asheville has the only printmaking studio east of the Mississippi and is one of just two institutions in the country with this type of facility; the other is UCLA.

Students can also study Cherokee, providing an opportunity to engage with the language and culture of the region.

Some of the university's popular areas of study include data science and atmospheric sciences. Astronomy is another particularly interesting option because UNC Asheville is the only university within the UNC system to offer astronomy as a major.

Students interested in technology and engineering have an unusual opportunity through a special program offered jointly with NC State University. The Mechatronics Engineering program combines mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering to prepare students to develop smart systems and advanced technologies.

Music-minded students can also explore Music Technology, which combines music engineering, production, theory, and performance with subjects such as mathematics, computer science, electronics, and music business.

Career Preparation

Despite its relatively small size, UNC Asheville places an emphasis on helping students connect their academic experiences to the professional world.

Internship opportunities can sometimes come directly through faculty relationships. We heard about one professor who had previously worked at Disney and was able to create internship opportunities for students through those professional connections.

The university also offers curated internship programs during the spring and summer, along with professional advising to help students navigate career preparation.

And because of the university's small size, students can benefit from small class sizes and greater access to professors — something that can be particularly valuable for students looking for mentorship and hands-on opportunities.

My Takeaway

UNC Asheville offers an interesting combination: the intimacy of a small liberal arts university, the resources of a public university system, Division I athletics, and the cultural and outdoor opportunities of Asheville right outside campus.

For students who want a smaller college environment but don't want to give up access to a vibrant city, unique academic programs, and opportunities to get involved beyond the classroom, UNC Asheville is certainly a school worth exploring.
